Fit Friday: Hiking


Hey Family, 

Welcome to Fit Friday where we introduce a new exercise for you to add to your workout routine.  For the month of January, our focus is on the Great Outdoors and fitness programs that can be done outside.  With people working long hours and long commutes, more people are opting to move outside of the four walls to the great outdoors. 

Since the New Year has just started and one the most popular resolution is to get healthy, We decided Hiking would be our introduction to PSC Fit Friday. 

What is Hiking?

Hike is defined as a walk for a long distance, especially across country or in the woods.  It is a cardio workout that usually engages the whole body.  Depending, on the trail chosen, all muscles will be in motions.  Many hiking trails are rough terrain and involve hikers to travel on trails with many different elevations.  

Why Hiking?

Hiking is a cardio workout.  It is good for the heart and builds endurance.  It helps with overall health and weight loss.  The cost is low depending how involved one wants to get in Hiking.  If you want to keep it local, the cost is free.  Many counties offer hiking trails for their residents.   If you decided to try a State Park trail there is a small fee to park.  We have never paid more than $5 to park.  If you want to travel out of state there will be a cost for lodging and gear.  A good, website to visit to learn more about Hiking in the US, is the American Hiking Society (www.americanhiking.org).  They have a great page for resources on Hiking and Traveling. 

How to Get Started?

If you are in Atlanta and surrounding areas, join us this Saturday May 30, 2015  at Sweetwater Creek State Park.     The Workout & Greet: Hiking Tour is a great way to meet new friends and get healthy at the same time.  If you can't meet us, we suggest researching a local trail at your local state or county parks. Gather a group of friends  and hit the trails.
