According to Shauna Green, a contributing writer for the eHow website (a website that supplies information and facts significant to the going green movement), the phrase "going green" refers to "the process of changing one's lifestyle for the safety and benefit of the environment." Green also says "people who "go green" make decisions about their daily lives while considering what impact the outcome of those decisions may have on global warming, pollution, loss of animal habitats, and other environmental concerns." Of course I am a supporter of this movement and have begun to make changes in my life that benefit the environment like recycling water bottles by washing them with hot water and refilling them with filtered water in an effort to cut down on the amount of plastic I use and discard. Recycling aluminum and hard plastics is another way my household has become environmentally conscious, but that's not the way I wanted to go with my contribution to this month's "Going Green" theme on Phatskinnychic...

What I want to propose is that we, as women, take the same approach to "going green" in our personal lives the same way we have made steps to be environmentally conscious. I am sure all of us have some things or people in our lives that pollute and even poison our growth and happiness. Just like we have contributed to damaging the environment with our need for excess, so have we polluted our lives with people who do not benefit us emotionally, financially, spiritually or physically. People whom sole purpose seem to be to complicate or stand in the way of progression we have going on in our lives. In order to rid ourselves of this problem, we have to be able to decipher whose presence in our lives is beneficial and whose presence is no longer needed. I am not saying this is an easy process but it is a necessary one. Friendships that are not a source of support, relationships that lack love and understanding and even family members that contribute to dysfunctionality are all examples of ways we can allow people to become pollutants in our lives. Sometime in order to move forward, you have to sever ties with those who seek to hold you back.

Another way we can "go green" in our lives is to treat our bodies the same way we should be treating our environment. What you put into your body is what you get out of it. Your body is your temple and it should be treated as such. Just like we are concerned with global warming and water pollution, we should also be concerned with the pesticides used on the fruits and vegetables we purchase and feed to our families. We should also be concerned about the hormones fed to the animals that we use as a source of meat. Read the labels and do the research. Although organic foods are more expensive (believe me I know firsthand) in the long run, they are better for your body. We only get this one body; we have to take care of it while we have it.

So as you are recycling, reusing and re-purposing things in your life to protect and improve the environment, please do not forget it is equally important to do the same in your personal lives. Uncomplicate your life by removing the clutter and pollutants of negative past experiences and empty, useless relationships. Recycle and reuse those relationships that offer support and encourage your personal growth. And lastly, re-purpose yourself! It is never too late to reinvent yourself and start the process of self improvement. Go Green in all aspects of your life for a better you and a better world.
